THE FRANKLIN STORY

In July 2019 our family lost a great man – Gary Franklin Carey. An extraordinary man in countless ways with talents that seemed to appear constantly throughout his life. The way many will remember him was as a master craftsman; a woodworker, musical instrument maker, cabinet maker, chainsaw totem pole carving guru, if you could make it out of wood he would and could do it.

Growing up spending countless hours watching him in his element, helping out where possible, and absorbing information I would not fully understand until later are by far some of the fondest memories that I have of him. He could do it all, he knew it all, and if he didn’t, he’d grab a book, take a class, and try until he got it. Over the course of his life he made so many beautiful works from wood, works that will endure for years to come and carry his spirit with them wherever they should go. That’s the mark of a true craftsman, to not only create great work but also work that becomes something more than its intended function – a memory, a story, a tradition, a family heirloom to be passed from one generation to the next.

On that July Friday we said goodbye to our craftsman and one final promise was made – that his legacy would be carried on. So, I began to read and research and experiment with different tools and techniques. Putting myself on the same path he put himself on decades ago to become a craftsman and create magnificent pieces from wood to help carry his spirit along.

In 2020 Franklin Custom Woodworks began the way many things began that year – at home with too much spare time and an uncertain future. As the year went on the future became clearer and the vision started to crystalize to create quality woodwork to help make our time at home better. With the goal of creating beautiful pieces that will become a part of your home and your family and to help create lasting memories with the ones you care about the most.
